Fort Stewart, recently renamed from Fort Benning in March 2025 to honor World War I veteran Corporal Fred G. Benning, remains a critical hub for military operations. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.

HINESVILLE, Ga. — A shooting at Fort Stewart, a major U.S. Army installation in southeast Georgia, left five soldiers injured on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, prompting a temporary lockdown of the base and nearby facilities. The incident, which occurred in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2ABCT) area, was reported at 10:56 a.m. EDT, and the suspect was apprehended by 11:35 a.m., according to base officials.
Fort Stewart, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is home to the 3rd Infantry Division and is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River. The base issued a lockdown at 11:04 a.m., affecting the 2ABCT complex, Wright Army Airfield, Evans Army Airfield, and on-base schools, including Diamond, Kessler, and Murray Elementary Schools. The lockdown in the main cantonment area was lifted by 12:10 p.m., with schools returning to normal operations by 12:30 p.m., as confirmed by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). The 2ABCT complex remained under restricted access as investigations continued.
All five injured soldiers were promptly treated on-site and transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for further care. Some victims were later transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, a regional trauma center, though specific details about their conditions have not been released. Fort Stewart officials confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the community following the suspect’s apprehension.
The FBI’s Atlanta office, specifically its Savannah branch, is coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division to assist in the response and investigation. Law enforcement has not yet disclosed the suspect’s identity or motive, and no further details about the circumstances of the shooting have been made public. The incident drew attention from federal and state officials, with the White House confirming that President Donald Trump was briefed in the Situation Room after cutting short a scheduled lunch.
Nearby, Appling County Schools and Liberty County Schools, including Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary, and Snelson Golden Middle School, implemented precautionary lockdowns in response to the incident. These restrictions were lifted by early afternoon as the situation stabilized.
